Bangladesh: Death toll in Banani fire jumps to 25, Sri Lankan national among killed

At least 25 people have died and around 70 others have been injured in a massive fire that engulfed FR Tower in Dhaka’s Banani in Bangladesh on Thursday (March 28).

Of these, 13 bodies were found inside the 22-storey FR Tower on Kamal Ataturk Avenue after the fire was doused, the Fire Service and Civil Defence confirmed to the media.

The fire was doused following four hours of efforts by the rescue authorities on Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the multi-storey building around 12.45 pm, an official of the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room said.

Director of Kurmitola Hospital Brigadier General Rafiqun Nabi said a Sri Lankan national named Niras Chandra was killed in the tragedy.

Several firefighting units rushed in to douse the flames. The navy, army and the air force also joined the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government has constituted four investigating committees to probe the fire incident.
