Kabul’s Canine Defenders

Kabul’s Mine Detection Centre (MDC) trains about 200 German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois at a time to detect particular scents of explosives and narcotics. These dogs are stationed all over the Afghan capital today and can sniff out explosives that even metal detectors tend to miss.

The trainers and the handlers train for about two years together before they head out of MDC on duty.

The MDC was established in 1989 and has trained more than 1,100 dogs since.
