Kiev security official offered to resign

A senior Ukrainian security official offered to quit before President Volodymyr Zelenskiy began a visit to the U.S. this week, the President’s office said on Friday. Oleksandr Danylyuk, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, gave no reason for his decision and will stay on until Mr. Zelenskiy decides whether to accept his resignation, it said in a statement.

The statement gave no indication that the resignation was connected with a telephone call between Mr. Zelenskiy and Donald Trump that is at the centre of a formal impeachment inquiry into the U.S. President.

Earlier this week, Mr. Danylyuk said Ukraine did want not to be dragged into U.S. domestic politics.
