5 killed, one injured in car accident at Manathoor

Five persons were killed and one sustained serious injuries when the car they were travelling in rammed a house after hitting a tree on the wayside and a compound wall at Manathoor, near Ramapuram, on Sunday evening.

The deceased were identified as Vishnuraj, 27, of Kizhakkekkara house, Kadanad; Vijayaraj, alias Jobin K George, 28, of Naduvilekutt house, Kadanad; Pramod Soman, 27, of Erivelikunnel house, Kadanad; Sudhi George, 27, of Arakkaparambil house, Kadanad; and Ullas, 38, of Maleparambil house, Kadanad. Prabhath of Malayil house has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam. The accident occurred around 6.45 p.m. near the Manathoor church junction along Pala-Thodupuzha State Highway. Preliminary investigations attributed the collision to speeding and drunk driving.

The six-member team from Kadanad was returning home after visiting Thodupuzha. The driver lost control over the vehicle while overtaking another vehicle and hit a tree and a compound wall on the wayside. It later rammed a house and overturned. Four passengers were thrown off the vehicle in the impact of the collision. Two others who remained trapped inside the vehicle were taken out after cutting open the mangled car.
