Former Chief Secretary S.M Vijayanand has stressed the need for conserving and protecting the seed diversity of the country before it becomes extinct.
Speaking after inaugurating the Wayanad Seed Fest 2019 here on Thursday, Mr. Vijayanand said climate the seed diversity of each of the locations of Kerala is unique and better adapted to the local climatic conditions which may have the ability to survive extreme weather situations.
The seed fest was one of the opportunities that promotes farmer level exchange of seeds, Mr. Vijayanand added. As Wayanad is one of the biodiversity hot spots on the Western ghats, the region would have rich diversity in plant and animal resources, said N. Anil Kumar, Executive Director MSSRF.
Dr.Anilkumar stressed the role played by farmers as custodians of genetic diversity intheir agriculture land. The three day programme is being organised by the MSSRF here in association with NABARD, Kerala State Biodiversity Board, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Seed Care and Wayanad Tribal Development Action Council.
