Chandy seeks CBI probe into Noushad murder

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has demanded an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the murder of Noushad, a booth president of the Congress at Punna, near Chavakkad, recently.

He was speaking after inaugurating a march taken out by the Thrissur District Congress Committee to the office of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) here on Tuesday in protest against the delay in arresting those behind the murder.

Police apathy

“The police failed to arrest those involved even 35 days after Nousahad was killed. It was a pre-planned, gruesome murder. But the police could neither arrest the people who planned it nor those who executed it. It shows the inefficiency of the police,” Mr. Chandy said.

He asked why the State government was scared of a CBI investigation into the murder case.

The State government which allegedly spent lakhs of rupees to protect those involved in the Shuhaib murder case was trying to cover up criminal activities, the former Chief Minister said.

‘Stop violence’

The Marxist party should stop its policy of violence against its political rivals. Mr. Chandy said the Congress would protect the family of Noushad.

Ignoring rain, hundreds of Congress workers took part in the protest march to the DIG office.

T.N. Prathapan and Ramya Haridas, MPs; Anil Akkara, MLA; former speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan; senior Congress leaders O. Abdurahiman Kutty, Padmaja Venugopal, Joseph Challissery, Shaji Kodankandathu, Joseph Tajet, Jose Vallur, Rajendran Arangath, John Daniel , M.P. Vincent and T.U. Radhakrishnan were among those who participated in the protest.
