With the cancelling of the Lok Sabha polls in Vellore, Tamil Nadu has earned the dubious distinction of being the first State where election notification for a Parliamentary constituency was rescinded on charges of voter bribery.
In 2016, the polls for Aravakurichi and Thanjavur Assembly constituencies were rescinded on similar charges. The following year, the bypoll for Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency was rescinded following evidence of bribing of voters.
Candidate petitions CEC
Meanwhile, DMK Vellore candidate Kathir Anand petitioned Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, urging him to restore the election in the constituency, failing which he would take legal action. Alleging that the I-T Department searches were stage-managed by the ruling party, he said the action of cancelling the polls was politically motivated.
