The Nellore rural police have arrested former Ranji cricketer B. Nagaraju for allegedly trying to defraud a corporate hospital here.
Presenting him before the media here on Tuesday, Nellore Rural Deputy Superintendent of Police K.V. Raghava Reddy said a call was received by the hospital authorities purportedly from a senior official in the Secretariat on February 23 this year asking them to sponsor him and in return he would display the hospital logo on his cricket bat.
The cricket player was arrested close to the hospital late on Monday following a complaint from the hospital. The DSP said the cricketer got sponsorships from different firms when he represented the Andhra team. The player later got addicted to vices. With a view to making quick money, he allegedly duped gullible persons and corporate firms to continue his extravagant lifestyle, the DSP added.
A post-graduate in management, Nagaraju hailing from Yavvaripeta in Srikakulam district and living in Madhurawada in Visakhapatnam district, was involved in several similar offences in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur and Hyderabad in the past, the DSP said.
