Gunfight breaks out in J&K’s Shopian district

Srinagar An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir Friday, officials said here.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Imamsahib area of Shopian in south Kashmir following information about presence of militants there, a police official said.


Meanwhile, IANS reports on firing exchanges that took place in Sopore’s Warpora area. It was the same site of an encounter on Thursday where two policemen were injured.

The police said that there were no reports of any militant casualties in this gun battle so far.

All educational institutions in Sopore were closed and mobile Internet services suspended as a precautionary measure.
