The Congress in Madhya Pradesh last week readmitted two former leaders from the BJP. Chaudhary Rakesh Singh, a former deputy leader of the opposition and a prominent Brahmin leader from Bhind, had switched over to the BJP in 2013, but the party denied him a ticket in the 2013 assembly election. He contested the 2018 assembly election as the BJP candidate from Bhind, but lost.
The other Congress entrant, former MLA Nishith Patel, comes from a family of party loyalists in the Mahakoshal region. Suspended for alleged anti-party activity, he joined the BJP in August 2014. Last year, he failed to get the BJP ticket from Bahoriband.
Before the assembly election, the Congress had announced that many former leaders who had ‘betrayed’ the party were looking to make a return, but they wouldn’t be allowed in at any cost. The question is, what has transpired since for the party to change its mind. Is the Congress short of talent?
