The Catholic Church in the State has protested against a proposal by the Law Reforms Commission to introduce the Kerala Church (Properties and Institution) Bill 2019.
Hundreds of Catholic lay people and clergy joined protest meetings and processions after the Sunday Mass in different parts of the State. They wore black badges and held dharnas on church premises to protest against the proposed Bill.
Youth organisations in the Catholic Church had given a call to members to send e-mails and letters to the Law Reforms Commission protesting against the proposal, Church sources said. A circular issued by Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) was read out during the Mass on Sunday in all parishes. All three rites of the Catholic Church joined the protest.
The circular sent out by the KCBC had claimed there was no justification in the proposal for the Church Bill. The reasons stated for the introduction of the Bill were not based on facts, the bishops said in the circular.
