The Income Tax Department has continued its search and seizure operations on two groups of educational institutions connected to former Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara and former Minister R.L. Jalappa, on Friday. The search operations began on Thursday morning and is yet to be concluded. This comes amidst allegations that Central agencies are targeting Opposition leaders.
The searches – spread across 28 premises in three districts (Bengaluru, Tumakuru, and Kolar) – that were on till late on Thursday night are expected to continue on Friday as well. Dr. Parameshwara’s Bengaluru residence was also searched.
I-T sleuths have recovered around ₹5 crore from those covered during the search operations including agents for admission to these colleges and a landlord who had recently sold a piece of land to one of the trustees of one of the education institutions. There is no clarity yet on recoveries made, if any, from the residence of the former DCM.
The searches relate to the capitation fee these institutions allegedly collected in cash for what is termed “medical seat blocking scam” during the NEET counselling for undergraduate medical course for 2019-2020, sources in the department said.
