INX Media case: Delhi court allows ED to interrogate P. Chidambaram at Tihar jail

A Delhi court on Tuesday allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to interrogate former Union Minister P. Chidambaram at Tihar jail in the INX Media money laundering case.

Special Judge A. K. Kuhar passed the order.

The probe agency had sought permission of the court to arrest him and remand him to its custody for 14 days.

ED, which had sought custodial interrogation of Mr. Chidambaram in the court, plans to arrest him at Tihar Jail on Wednesday.

Counsel for the senior Congress leader, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, had opposed the probe agency’s two applications, submitting that they had not followed the procedure in the matter.

He argued that they should have rather sought permission to interrogate him at Tihar jail, and arrest him, if they felt necessary.

Mr. Sibal also argued that the probe agency could not take the former Minister into its custody as both offences had originated from the same FIR. Therefore, they could not take him into custody for the offence of money laundering separately. As the maximum remand of 14 days was already over, the custody could not be granted.

Mr. Chidambaram is presently in judicial custody at the jail in the INX Media corruption case.
