Mamata challenges Modi, Shah

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee targeted the BJP government on Tuesday arguing that she is more deeply into her religion than Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP president Amit Shah. Speaking at a programme in the city, Ms. Banerjee said she could recite religious mantras better than the BJP leaders. “Worshipping does not only mean putting a tilak on the forehead. You must understand the meaning of the mantras. I challenge Modi-Shah to compete with me in chanting mantras,” she said. Ms. Banerjee said that “nothing could be further from the truth [when] it is alleged that we do not allow Durga Puja to take place in Bengal.” She targeted the BJP saying that the party “brings back” the Ram Mandir issue during the time of election. “They only engage in political rhetoric over Ram Mandir before election.”

We have renovated temples at Tarapith, Tarakeshwar and Dakshineshwar,” Ms. Banerjee said. She said she and her party do not believe in “religion of hatred.” “We love everyone, irrespective of their communities,” she added.
