Man shot dead for ‘questioning illegal sale of arrack’

A person was murdered, after he allegedly questioned about sale of illegally brewed arrack, in Kothurupadu village, Vanjari Panchayat, G.madugula mandal in Visakhapatnam district.

The deceased was identified as Marri Rajayya, a farmer of Kothurupadu.

According to reports, on March 15, villagers of Kothurupadu had conducted a meeting and decided that no one in the village would sell arrack. The same night, a few villagers came to know that one Pangi Rama was selling arrack in his house.

M Rajayya along with G Pulu, G Raju and M Ramu went to house of Rama. They questioned him about the sale of arrack yet again in the village and also asked him to attend village elders meeting, for which he refused. After a heated exchange of words, Rama went inside his house and came out with a knife and a country-made handgun (tapancha). First he attacked them with knife, and as they put up a stiff defence he whipped out the tapancha and fired at Rajayya. He received a bullet wound on the left side of his stomach, which led to his death on the spot.

Family members of Rajayya lodged a complaint. Police have registered a case and search is on for the accused, who is at large.
