Palakkad to be treated to a week full of music

From Friday, Palakkad will be treated to a week full of music during the 11th National Music Festival being organised by the Palghat Fine Arts Society began here on Friday.

A Carnatic vocal concert by Pantula Rama marked the beginning of the festival. M.S.N. Murthy accompanied her on violin, Palakkad K.S. Maheshkumar was on mridamgam and Trichy K. Murali was on ghatom.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy secretary N. Radhakrishnan Nair inaugurated the festival. He also gave away this year’s award of the Palghat Fine Arts Society to mridamgam maestro Trivandrum V. Surendran.

A disciple of renowned mridamgam maestro Palghat T.S. Mani Iyer, Mr. Surendran was chosen for the award in recognition of his contributions to classical music. The award comprised ₹15,000, a citation and a plaque.

The National Music Festival will continue till October 31.Well-known Carnatic musicians from across the country have been roped in to perform in the coming days. Violin maestros A. Kanyakumari and Nishant Chandran will present a duet on Saturday. Patri Sathishkumar will be on mridamgam and B.S. Purushotham on ghatom.
