Police say sorry for arresting wrong man

In a case of mistaken identity, the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate police here on Saturday apologised for arresting a wrong man and forwarding him to court from where he was remanded to jail custody. Family members of the victim, however, demanded compensation for causing trauma and stringent action against the erring policemen.

Non-bailable warrant

Executing a six-year-old non-bailable warrant, the Lalbag police had arrested one Chandan Moharana of Chandini Chowk here on the night of March 11.A local court had remanded Chandan to jail custody. He is behind the bars for over 12 days now.

“After enquiry, it was revealed that the arrested person was in no way involved with the 2013 March criminal case Since the arrested person and his address matched with that of the name and address mentioned in the arrest warrant, he was arrested,” said police commissioner Satyajit Mohanty, regretting the trauma and inconvenience caused to the family of Chandan.

Adequate cooperation

Mr. Mohanty assured the family of adequate cooperation from the police to ensure that Chandan is released as soon as possible. “We will appeal to the court pleading that the arrested person was not guilty in the concerned case and his arrest was a case of mistaken identity,” the Police Commissioner said.
