Political parties in Tamil Nadu expressed contrasting views on the Election Commission’s decision to conduct the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu in a single phase.
“It is a good decision. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the AIADMK led alliance will win all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu and 1 seat in Puducherry,” AIADMK coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said.
BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “It is a welcome decision that the polls will be held in the second phase itself. The 2019 election will be fought on ‘We Want Modi, Modi again’ platform. When asked if she expects both the Lok Sabha and the bypoll results for 18 constituencies on similar lines, she said the AIADMK-led alliance would sweep both the polls.
However, DMK MLA P.T.R .Palanivel Thiagarajan said the dates coincided with the Chithirai festival, a major event in Madurai and voters have to decide between attending the festival and exercising their franchise.
CPI (M) state secretary K. Balakrishanan said there were only 20 days for candidates to campaign in their constituencies after the closing of nominations. He also expressed apprehension over the turnout in the election due to the Kallazhagar festival. “Even the Election Commission will find it difficult to make arrangements for the elections. Government employees, and teachers too will attend this festival. There are chances that the voting percentage might go down as well due to this,” he said.
