A preliminary meeting of people’s representatives and senior officials, chaired by O.R. Kelu, MLA, at Mananthavady on Friday discussed the alignment report for the proposed Mananthavady-Kannur airport four-lane highway. It was decided to convene a meeting of the public in Mananthavady municipality and Thavinhal grama panchayat on November 16.
The meeting deliberated renovation work on 18 km of the proposed highway from Gandhi Park at Mananthavady to Ambayathode in Kannur district, Mr. Kelu told The Hindu.
According to the alignment report prepared by Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited, a Bengaluru-based firm, the proposed four-lane highway passing through Boys Town and Palchuram in Wayanad district and Peravur, Sivapuram, and Mattannur in Kannur district will have a width of around 30 metres, except in the Palchuram ghat section, Mr. Kelu said. It will have a width of 14 metres in the ghats section.
The land required for the highway project will be acquired by offering adequate compensation to owners. Though many a house and commercial establishment will be partially demolished, places of worship and educational institutions will be conserved to a certain extent, he said. Mr. Kelu sought the complete support of the public for the execution of the project. Issues related to land acquisition will be solved amicably, Mr. Kelu said.
