In a clear sign of defiance, BJP MP B.N. Bache Gowda’s son Sharat Bache Gowda has announced that he and his supporters will be in the forefront of Tipu Jayanti celebrations scheduled to be held next month.
Participating in an Urus in Hoskote, Mr. Sharat Bache Gowda, who is also the BJP’s Yuva Morcha leader, said he will ensure a grand Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Thammarasanahalli near his native village in Hoskote taluk.
Mr. Sharat Bache Gowda’s announcement to celebrate Tipu Jayanti comes after the BJP government, soon after coming to power in the State in July this year, scrapped the birth anniversary celebrations of the 18th century warrior king introduced during former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s tenure.
The BJP had strongly opposed the celebration of the erstwhile Muslim ruler’s birth anniversary. “We were told not to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. We were told it is wrong to celebrate Tipu Jayanti”, Mr Sharat Bache Gowda said before defiantly announcing that he and his supporters will be in the forefront of the celebrations in Thammarasanahalli later this year. Thammarasanahalli is situated close to Tipu’s birth place in Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Mr. Sharat Bache Gowda had unsuccessfully contested the 2018 Assembly elections as a BJP candidate from Hoskote and lost to Congress candidate N. Nagaraj (MTB), who has now been disqualified after he resigned from the Assembly earlier this year. Mr. Sharat Bache Gowda has been strongly opposed to the saffron party’s plans to field Mr. Nagaraj in the by-elections scheduled for December 5.
Mr. Sharat Bache Gowda had recently spurned the BJP’s efforts to placate him with the post of Chairman of Karnataka Housing Board.
