Suspected Maoists abduct former MTPC member in Telangana

BHADRADRI-KOTHAGUDEM: Suspected Maoists allegedly abducted a former Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MTPC) member owing allegiance to the ruling TRS from Kothur, a village on the fringe of a forest in Charla mandal in Telangana’s tribal heartland of Bhadrachalam division, late on Monday.

The incident occurred close to the volatile inter-State border with Chhattisgarh’s Maoist stronghold of south Bastar division.

According to sources, a group of Maoist rebels whisked away N. Srinivas Rao, 40, from his house in Kothur village. His family members, including wife and son, pleaded with the rebels to let go of Mr. Srinivas, but to no avail, sources added.

Police sources said local land issues could be the motive behind Mr. Rao’s abduction.

We have not received any complaint of kidnap yet, a police officer said.

The abduction of Mr. Rao triggered panic in the far-flung villages dotting the dense forest region along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border.

The incident comes close on the heels of stepped-up combing operations launched by the police based on credible inputs that action teams of Maoists were moving in their erstwhile strongholds in the district.
