To avoid defections, Cong. may take affidavits from candidates

Defection of its MLAs to the ruling party is forcing the Congress to seriously consider taking affidavits from the contestants in the local body elections that they would not change the party once they get elected on the party ticket.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy indicated this at an informal interaction with the reporters here on Wednesday. Mr. Reddy said the party will consider the option taking views of all senior leaders.

TPCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar created a flutter during the Lok Sabha elections releasing an affidavit that he would not jump the party if elected for the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency.

He released the signed affidavit to the media as well promising his constituency voters that he would not stoop down to the level of changing parties after getting elected on Congress ticket.

His thinking actually echoed in the party circles and a demand emerged from the second rung leaders as well that such affidavits should be taken to put pressure on candidates now seeking tickets for the MPTC and ZPTC polls due next month. It is in this context that Mr. Reddy’s comments gain significance.

CM is anti-Dalit: Uttam

Mr. Reddy condemned the house arrest of MRPS founder Manda Krishna and said Telangana is facing tyrannical rule.

If Mr. Manda Krishna wants to stage a protest against the demolition of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue in the city, what is the government’s objection, he asked, and questioned what is the message that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao wants to send to the society.

“The insulted meted out to Dr. Ambedkar cannot be tolerated and more so the government’s disrespect to him,” he said.

‘Congress is with Konda’

The TPCC president also condemned the high handedness of the police in dealing with party Chevella parliamentary contestant Konda Vishweshwer Reddy.

The party is solidly behind Mr. Vishweshwer Reddy and will not tolerate the misuse of police by the government, he said.

Mr. Reddy said the party would announce the candidates for elections and also for the ZP chairman post in advance wherever there is clarity.

The first list will be released within a couple of days and the local leadership has been entrusted with the responsibility of selecting the candidates.
