At least two labourers were killed when a portion of an under-construction multi-level car parking building collapsed early on Friday at the APMC Yard premises in Bengaluru.
The deceased were identified as Rahul and Rakesh hailing from Bihar and West Bengal. About eight people, who were injured were rushed to the hospitals nearby.
According to sources, around 4.15 am, the workers were pouring concrete mix on the roof when the scaffolding supporting it collapsed. Subsequently, Rahul and Rakesh got buried under a heavy concrete mix. Locals said around 50 people were working at the construction site.
MLA K. Gopalaiah, who visited the site, blamed the local site engineer and APMC Yard officials for negligence and dereliction. “It is clear that they built the scaffolding on loose soil without taking precautions. Action must be taken against them,” he said.
Traders told him that the multi-level car park was unnecessary and was a vanity project by APMC officials.
The yard sees thousands of tonnes of vegetable and pulses movement daily and much of the traffic movement is through trucks.
