Two Village Revenue Officers (VROs) were injured after they were allegedly attacked by the members of sand mafia at Naira in Srikakulam Rural mandal in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off that sand was being transported by trucks illegally, a group of six officials including the two VROs reached Naira. Around 30 workers engaged in sand excavation reportedly attacked the team of officials when the latter tried to stop the vehicles.
However, four officials managed to escape the attack. The injured VROs were identified as P. Chandrasekhar and B.V.R. Visweswara Rao, both belonging to Srikakulam Rural mandal.
More revenue officials reached the spot after the incident and seized the lorries. They shifted the injured VROs to Srikakulam government hospital.
It is learnt that illegal sand mining continues unabated from the beds of Nagavali, Vamsadhara, Mahendratanaya and Bahuda rivers. Taking a note of this, Collector J. Nivas has recently deployed special teams to check the malpractice.
Acting on a complaint, the Srikakulam Rural police registered a case. “People involved in the attack on the officials will not be spared,” he said.
The Collector, along with Joint Collector K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, visited the hospital and spoke to the injured VROs.
