Two-year-old boy falls into abandoned borewell in Tamil Nadu

A two-year-old boy fell into an abandoned borewell at Nadukattupatti near Manapparai in Tiruchirappalli district on Friday evening.

The boy, Sujith Wilson, was apparently playing close to his house when he slipped and fell into a borewell hole nearby. Hearing his cries, his parents and neighbours rushed, only to find the child struck inside the borewell.

Television visuals showed the boy trapped with his hands above his head.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel were alerted and rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation with the help of locals. A tube was dropped into the borewell to supply oxygen while an earth mover was deployed to dig up a trench close to the borewell. Rescue workers hope to reach the boy by digging a tunnel.

The borewell hole, said to be about 25 feet, had reportedly been closed but had opened up after recent spells of heavy rain.
