The University of Mysore has hailed the selection of one of its students to represent the country in the World University Games to be held in Italy and will meet all the expenses related to it.
P. Krishnaiah, Director, Department of Physical Education, said K.R. Dhanusha, a student of Basudev Somani College, who won the gold medal in the heptathlon event at the All-India Inter-University Athletic Meet this year, has been selected to represent the country in the World University Games to be held in Napoli, Italy, from July 3 to 14.
He said a coaching camp for selected athletes will be held at the Bhubaneshwar in June.
Mr. Krishnaiah refuted reports in a section of the media that Dhanusha would be unable to participate in the World University Games as she was not in a position to meet the visa fee, travel charges, cost of attire, and training fee, all amounting to nearly ₹2.26 lakh.
In Dhanusha’s case, the university has already sent the entire estimated mount to Kalinga Institute of Industrial Training at Bhubaneshwar where the training will be held and from where the athletes will proceed to participate in the World University Games, he added.
Mr. Krishnaiah said UoM would help all its students excelling in sports and representing any recognised events. He added that in 2018-19, the varsity had disbursed ₹15.7 lakh as cash prizes to sportspersons and reams which distinguished itself in recognised events.
