What regional parties have lined up for Tamil Nadu’s 2.98 crore women voters

As Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 18, here is a look at what regional parties have promised the State’s women and transgender voters in terms of safety, reservation, jobs, health and education. Of a total of 845 candidates from both regional and national parties in the fray in T.N., 65 are women and one is a transgender.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)

Safety:

Self-defence classes in schools and colleges

CCTV cameras in all public places

Reservation:

33% reservation bill in State Assemblies and Parliament

Jobs:

Interest-free loan of ₹50,000 to all BPL in rural areas for small trades

Launch of a rural women employment scheme

30% reservation for women in Central government Jobs

Health:

Free supply of sanitary napkins for women by installing vending machines in government offices, schools, colleges and public places

Education:

Providing free education to women deserted by their husbands and girl children without support

Transgender welfare:

Comprehensive legislation for welfare of transgenders, in a continuation of their previous efforts

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)

Safety:

Implement the girl child protection scheme and the Cradle at the national level

Reservation:

33% reservation in State Assemblies and Parliament

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK)

Safety:

Creation of a ‘favourable environment for women and girls who go to schools, colleges and workplaces

Women below age of 21 to get parental consent for marriage to protect them against ‘love drama

33% reservation in police force for women across the country

Reservation:

33% reservation bill in State Assemblies and Parliament

PMK has promised 50% reservation in local bodies

Jobs:

Loan waiver for self-help groups

Transgender welfare:

Reservation for transgenders in education and jobs and hostels for those separated from their families

Waiving of self-help groups debt

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM)

Separate women police wing to deal with crimes against women

Mobile and fast-track courts to expedite cases of crime against women

Tax rebates for private companies where 25% of the workforce are women

More investment in anganwadis

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK)

Strong action against perpetrators

Easy business loans for rural and urban young women up to ₹2 lakh

Health:

Free health check and sanitary napkins for girls starting from Class VI until they graduate

Education:

Female college students to receive ₹10,000 in two instaliments until they finish Bachelors degree
