A youth was hacked to death by an unidentified gang at Adikadalayi under the Kannur city police station limits here on Monday night.
The deceased has been identified as Rauf alias Katta Rauf, 30, a resident of Kannur city. The police said that Rauf was attacked near the Adikadalayi beach road at around 10.15 p.m.
He was immediately rushed to a hospital by the police, but he succumbed to his injuries. He was going to his brother’s house on his two-wheeler when the assailants attacked him, the police said.
According to the police, he was named accused in the murder of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) worker M. Farooq in 2016.
Preliminary inquiry showed that political hostility was not behind the murder, the police said. He was also an accused in many criminal cases, including drug trafficking. Rauf was released on parole a few days ago. The police said that he had been arrested with eight kg of ganja last year.
The police suspect that rivalry between criminal gangs was behind the murder. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers in the Kannur city area following the incident.
