Electrician Nandakumar, 22, of Ambur who was hit by a cricket bat by his friend Karthik, 23, on Monday evening died on Tuesday afternoon.
Police sources said the victim and the accused were friends and had consumed liquor on Monday evening.
While Nandakumar was playing cricket with his friends, Karthik who also happened to be there picked up an argument with him. In the course of a heated exchange, Karthik allegedly hit Nandakumar with a cricket bat. The latter fell unconscious and was taken to his house.
When he did not wake up on Tuesday, family members rushed Nandakumar to a private hospital, where doctors declared him ‘seriously injured’ and in need of specialised treatment. He was taken back to his home by family members and later he died in his sleep.
Karthik was severely thrashed by relatives of Nandakumar, before being handed over to to the police. Ambur taluk police registered a case and Karthik was taken into custody.
