Alzarri Joseph was pleased as punch after he recorded the best bowling figure in the history of the Indian Premier League as Mumbai Indians defended 136 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday. Joseph picked up 6 for 12 off 3.4 overs to break an 11-year record held by Sohail Tanvir. | Match Report | Highlights |
On May 4, 2018, Sohail Tanvir had taken 6 for 14 for Rajasthan Royals against Chenani Super Kings. Adam Zampa had taken 6 for 19 for Rising Pune Supergiant also against SRH on May 10, 2016. Overall, Alzarri Joseph’s 6-wicket haul was only the third time a bowler had taken 6 wickets in an innings in the IPL.
The icing on the cake for Mumbai Indians was that Alzarri Joseph was making his debut. He had never played in the IPL before and Lasith Malinga’s absence meant MI decided to go in with the 22-year-old Alzarri Joseph. He has 24 wickets in 16 ODIs and 25 wickets in 9 Tests for the West Indies.
On Saturday, Alzarri Joseph was on fire as he ripped apart the SRH batting line-up. He dismissed David Warner off his first delivery in the IPL and was even on a hat-trick when he removed Deepak Hooda and Rashid Khan off succcessive deliveries.
Joseph closed the match with the wickets of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Siddharth Kaul to finish with record-breaking figures. Not surprisingly, Alzarri Joseph was an easy choice for man-of-the-match award.
“It’s a dream start.. can’t get better than this. I just wanted to bowl to the plans,” Joseph told the broadcasters in the post-match presentation ceremony. “When they said I was playing, I decided to keep it simple and back myself.

“When I got my first wicket, I had a muted celebration since I was focused on the game that we had to win. The boys are really playing well, lot of hard work, so all we need to do is go to the park and show them what we can do,” he said.
