In a big pressure IPL 2019 final between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, high drama was created where a situation arose when an MS Dhoni run-out decision was sent upstairs to the third umpire.
MS Dhoni is arguably the best finisher in cricket and in the time when he was desperately needed by the Chennai Super Kings, the run-out decision was very crucial as a result in favour of Mumbai Indians could have swung the match in their favour.
It was during the second delivery of the 13th over from Hardik Pandya, when Shane Watson, who was on the strike for the CSK, pulled the ball to Lasith Malinga at short fine to steal a single.
MS Dhoni tried to capitalise on Malinga’s overthrow by stealing another run but Ishan Kishan at mid-on ignited the stumps with a direct hit toward’s the bowler’s end.
The ground umpire referred the decision to third Umpire, Nigel Llong, who took his time analyse it from different angles.
While one angle showed MS Dhoni was on the line, from the other angle it looked like the captain missed the line with just inches.
Emotions swivelled in the crowd as the umpire’s decision was pending to be shown on the big screen. However, the captain had to eventually depart as Nigel Llong pressed the red button, giving MS Dhoni run-out.
It is a rare scenario in cricket when MS Dhoni is dismissed through a run-out. The CSK captain is known for his quick single-taking ability.
Coincidentally, the last time CSK captain got dismissed in a run-out was also against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2019. Prior to that, such a situation arose back in 2017, when MS Dhoni played for Rising Pune Supergiants against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In the end, Lasith Malinga defended 8 runs in the final over as Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by 1 run to win their 4th IPL trophy.
