Chennai Super Kings opener Shane Watson and Sunrisers Hyderabad leg-spinner Rashid Khan were involved in a heated war of words in a high-scoring 2019 IPL match at the Chepauk on Tuesday.
Shane Watson and Suresh Raina had got off to a rapid start in pursuit of 176 against Sunrisers Hyderabad after Faf du Plessis was brilliantly run out by Deepak Hooda.
Watson, who has been out of from in the 2019 Indian Premier League was key for the defending champions as Chennai Super Kings sought to reclaim the top spot in the points table. Rashid Khan, the most dangerous bowler in the SRH camp, was targetted early in his first over by Shane Watson and both men were fired up.
Rashid Khan glared at Shane Watson after he hit him for a boundary off only his 2nd delivery and it was soon a public verbal joust even as the over ended.
Rashid Khan, in his next over, bowled a beautful googly to remove Suresh Raina, who was looking in sublime touch. Meanwhile, Shane Watson continued to hold fort for the Super Kings in a steep chase as Ambati Rayudu joined him in the middle.
In the end, Rashid Khan conceded 44 runs off his 4 overs – the most expensive spell he has bowled in the 2019 IPL. Shane Watson, meanwhile, smashed 96 and scripted CSK’s 6-wicket win at the Chepauk.
This was not the first time Shane Watson got involved in a sledge-fest this season.
Last month, Shane Watson had somehow managed to rile up Delhi Capitals fast bowler Ishan Sharma. DC skipper Shreyas Iyer pulled his pacer away but Watson next had an exchange with Kagiso Rabada.
Incidentally, in that game, Shane Watson smashed 44 off 26 balls as Chennai Super Kings stormed to a 6-wicket win. Watson was named man-of-the-match.
Between the Feroz Shah Kotla game on March 26 and the Chepauk game on April 23, Shane Watson’s run of scores read 13. 5, 26., 17, 0, 6, 31 and 5. He was on fire against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday but there were the usual Watson sparks flying again.
In the 2018 IPL final against Sunrisers, Shane Watson had hit a sensational hundred as Chennai Super Kings won the title for the 3rd time.
