On April 10, Kieron Pollard’s stunning assault had helped Mumbai Indians to a thrilling win over KXIP at the Wankhede Stadium.
R Ashwin, the KXIP skipper and M Ashwin did well to slow RCB down despite Virat Kohli’s brilliance. While R Ashwin picked 1 for 30 off his 4 overs, M Ashwin bowled his 4 overs economically, giving away only 24 runs.
But the pacers – Sam Curran, Mohammed Shami and Andrew Tye struggled and had no answrs in the face of AB de Villiers’ onslaught at the end. After Kohli’s dismissal, de Villiers was well supported by Marcus Stoinis as RCB finally had their first points of the season.
Earlier in the evening, Royal Challengers Bangalore fought back bravely after Chris Gayle smashed a quick fifty. Yuzvendra Chahal snared KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal in quick succession before Sarfaraz Khan and Sam Curran were sent back even as Chris Gayle slowed down against the spinners.
Kings XI Punjab needed Gayle to bat through the innings and he did just that by curbing his natutal instincts. He was dropped on 83 by Virat Kohli off the bowling of Umesh Yadav and needed 10 in the final over to hit his 7th IPL hundred, 2nd for KXIP and 1st against old team RCB.
However, Chris Gayle became only the 2nd batsman to remain stranded on 99 in IPL history after Suresh Raina. Gayle needed to hit a six off the final ball of the KXIP innings but he managed only a boundary off Mohammad Siraj and finished on 99 not out.
Royal Challengers Bangalore had lost all their 6 matches before tonight and Virat Kohli would have been thrilled to see his bowlers fight so hard. Navdeep Saini gave away only 23 runs in 4 overs while Chahal picked 2 for 33 off 4 overs.
Moeen Ali bowled brilliantly to finish with 1 for 19 off 4 overs.
