IPL 2019: Warner, Bairstow and Rashid script rare SRH victory over Dhoni-less CSK

David Warner hit a 25-ball 50 and Jonny Bairstow smashed 61 not out after Rashid Khan took 2 for 17 off 4 overs as Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets in the 2019 Indian Premier League. This was only SRH’s 3rd victory over CSK in the IPL.

Before Wednesday, Chennai Super Kings had won 8 out of 10 IPL matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Last year, CSK had won all their 4 matches vs SRH including the final thanks to a Shane Watson hundred.

Chasing a modest 133, David Warner and Jonny Bairstow got off to a rapid start. SRH blazed away to 58 for 0 off only 5 overs and the writing was already on the wall for the Super Kings who were without MS Dhoni on the field for the first time in the IPL since 2010.

MS Dhoni was ruled out with a back spasm as Suresh Raina took charge against the Sunrisers.

Raina won the toss and decided to bat against a top-quality bowling line-up and after a slow start, openers Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson began to pick up pace. Du Plessis was the more aggressive of the two and it looked like the pair had built a solid platform before Watson fell to Shahbaz Nadeem after adding 79 for the 1st wicket in 9.5 overs.

In the next over, Vijay Shankar extracted extra bounce to remove Faf du Plessis for 45, bringing to the middle Ambati Rayudu.

It was up to Raina and Rayudu to get CSK out of a hole but Rashid Khan caused some serious damage in his 3rd over. He removed Raina and Kedar Jadhav. CSK were reeling and hoped for a strong finish from Sam Billings but when he was done in by a slower one from Khaleel Ahmed, it was clear the Super Kings would have to settle for a below-par score.

Ambati Rayudu remained unbeaten on 25 off 21 but at no stage of his innings, did he look like he could take on the SRH attack. Ravindra Jadeja managed only 10 off 20 and remained not out.

In pursuit of a low target, David Warner came out all guns blazing and hit his 5th fifty of the season. He already has a hundred (against Royal Challengers Bangalore) in the 2019 IPL.

Warner was ruthless and punished anything loose. His knock was studded with 10 fours and it looked like he would race away to a win sooner rather than later before he was sent back by Deepak Chahar. However, the openers had taken 66 runs off 5.4 overs.

Even when Imran Tahir dismissed SRH skipper Kane Williamson (3) in the 7th over, there was little hope left for CSK. Bairstow switched gears and continiued to dominate the Super Kings bowlers to script a memorable win for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Despite the defeat, Chennai Super Kings sit comfortably on top of the points table with 7 wins and 14 points from 9 matches.
