Yuvraj Singh was at his vintage best for Mumbai Indians against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Bought for his base price of Rs 1 crore, Yuvraj showed he had lost none of his class when he hit his 13th IPL fifty and his first since May 2, 2017.
Two years ago, Yuvraj Singh had scored 70 not out against Delhi Daredevils for Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was one of two fifties Yuvraj scored in 2017. Next year, Yuvraj moved to Kings XI Punjab and endured his worst ever IPL season with 65 runs from 8 matches.
Yuvraj Singh repaid the faith Mumbai Indians showed in him with a 35-ball 53.
Not even Yuvraj Singh’s staunchest fans would have been really surprised if he went unsold in the IPL auction in December. However, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Mahela Jayawardene believed in Yuvraj and MI decided to bag him.
Yuvraj Singh took his time to get going but a few of his shots evoked memories of the past.
In 2015, Yuvraj Singh bagged a record Rs 16 crore deal with Delhi Daredevils. Royal Challengers Bangalore had bought him for Rs 14 crore the year before.
From the highs of 2014 and 2015, Yuvraj Singh almost went unsold in the auction for the 2019 IPL before Mumbai Indians bought him for Rs 1 crore.
This season, Yuvraj has looked fitter than 2018 and Zaheer Khan said his friend is determined to do well for Mumbai Indians.
“We needed an experienced batsman who controls the game in the middle. Who is better than Yuvraj Singh to do this? Yuvraj is looking forward to this season. He’s doing everything possible to make it count. This is great news for all his fans,” Zaheer had told the media last week.
On Sunday, Yuvraj Singh showed he meant business.
