Ahead of crucial Tamil Nadu vote, I-T dept says cash handlers being searched

Investigators are conducting searches at several places in Tamil Nadu on alleged cash handlers and a construction firm, the Income Tax department has said.

Tamil Nadu will soon vote in the ongoing general election as well as in a total of 22 bypolls. A monumental sum of unaccounted wealth has already been seized.

The Income Tax department said on Friday that its Chennai Directorate was searching a “group of cash handlers and financiers”, who, according to intelligence inputs, were “mobilising cash from unaccounted sources for possible use in the elections”.

It said two people, Akash Baskaran and Sujai Reddy, were being searched at 10 places in Chennai and one in Tirunelveli.

It also said it was investigating reports of unaccounted cash held by the PSK Engineering Construction Company, and searching three premises in Chennai and four in Namakkal. It did not specifically mention elections.

Tamil Nadu will send 39 MPs to the Lok Sabha in the general election on April 18. It will elect 18 MLAs in by-elections on the same day, and vote in four more bypolls on May 19.

The bypolls in particular are hugely consequential, as the ruling AIADMK hopes to shore up support for its government by increasing its contingent of MLAs to gain a clear majority.
