West Bengal Police has arrested two persons for allegedly posting objectionable content on social media against film actor Nusrat Jahan, who was recently named the Trinamool Congress candidate from Basirhat in West Bengal.
Both the arrested youths are local BJP workers in North 24 Paraganas district.
Subhendu Chakraborty, a resident of Baduria was picked up after police received a complaint that he had shared obscene pictures and text messages about Nusrat Jahan on social media. Police also arrested Tanmoy Bala, another BJP worker from Gaighata area over a similar complaint.
Ever since her candidature was announced earlier this week by TMC supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the Bengali filmstar has faced severe trolling on social media with multiple memes being circulated questioning her move to join politics and the TMC’s decision to field such members from the glamour world.
Police have confiscated the SIM and memory cards of the two arrested BJP workers. The two have been booked under IPC Sections 120B and 505/2. Both have been remanded to judicial custody after being produced before court.
In the Muslim dominated Basirhat, Trinamool Congress replaced its sitting MP Idris Ali with actress Nusrat Jahan, a political greenhorn. The TMC is not on a strong wicket in Basirhat following the communal riots of 2017, which dented Ali’s image and helped the BJP milk the situation in its favour. It is now one of the most communally polarized constituencies.
On the other hand, another Bengali film star, Mimi Chakraborty has replaced Sugata Bose, the erudite grand nephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the sitting MP from Jadavpur.
Both Mimi and Nusrat have been subjected to widespread criticism over their political plunge.
