The Maharashtra Congress on Wednesday decided to hold rallies across the state from next week with a slogan Remove BJP, Save Constitution’.
The Congress workers under state president Balasaheb Thorat protested against the BJP-run Uttarakhand government for submitting an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that reservation in government jobs is not constitutional responsibility of the government. At least a dozen Congress leaders including power minister Nitin Raut and education minister Varsha Gaikwad were present at the protest held near mantralaya.
Balasaheb Thorat alleged that the BJP and its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have conspired to snatch away the reservation of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBC), a right awarded by the Constitution.
The Uttarakhand government’s affidavit was against the fundamental right of reservation. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court ruled that it depends on the government whether reservation in government jobs should be applied. The BJP and RSS have been time and again talking about abolishing the reservation. The BJP governments in the Centre and in various states are working towards it. This is dangerous, Balasaheb Thorat said.
Balasaheb Thorat alleged that the Union government has reduced the funds reserved for SC, ST and OBCs.
The Congress government had made the funds available in proportion to the population of SC, ST and OBCs. The Union government has deprived the backward communities from jobs, cut down the scholarships to backward students. The backward communities are not getting justice in BJP ruled states, he said.
