The CRPF soliders walked quietly towards the shade with Satya Devi, 83, holding her hands as she placed one determined foot before another outside the polling booth.
“Dheere dheere aaiye,” one of the young women said as the elderly woman prepared to step onto a ramp.
Jammu is voting today in the first phase of elections to the Lok Sabha, the seventeenth such poll in India’s history — and in Satya Devi’s lifetime.
Today, she held up an inked finger for the camera (see photo above).

Women personnel have been deployed in several booths in Jammu.
Voters from as many as 20 states or Union Territories are heading to polling booths today, and they are not just choosing MPs.
In Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Odisha, voting has also begun in state elections. With the exception of Odisha, these states will complete polling for all seats today.
In Jammu and Kashmir, which has six Lok Sabha seats, only Jammu and Baramulla will elect members to the lower house of Parliament today.
India’s general election, a historic exercise in which 900 million people are eligible to vote, will conclude on May 19. Votes will be counted on May 23.
