Gujarat OBC leader Alpesh Thakor, who boosted the prospects of Congress in Gujarat after joining the party in 2017, has quit Congress days before the Lok Sabha elections.
Two of Alpesh’s supporters, MLA Dhavalsinh Thakor and MLA Bharatji Thakor have also resigned from Congress along with him.
The resignation comes after the Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena, an outfit floated by Alpesh Thakor, decided to sever its ties with the Congress and asked the legislator to resign and clear his stand within 24 hours.
Alpesh Thakor was rumoured to be unhappy with the Congress. Rumours of him joining the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been doing the rounds for some time.
The Thakor community leader holds a strong foothold among the OBCs in Gujarat. Alpesh Thakor’s quitting the party, serves a severe blow to the Congress.
Alpesh Thakor was one of the three Gujarat leaders, including Hardik Patel and Jignesh Mevani, who campaigned against the BJP during the 2017 assembly elections.
According to PTI, although he was keen to contest from Patan Lok Sabha seat, the Congress chose former MP Jagdish Thakor over Alpesh Thakor.
Alpesh Thakor had last month rejected the rumours of him joining BJP and said that he will remain with the Congress.
Alpesh had said last month, “Since the last few days reports of issues between me and the Congress leaders have surfaced in the media. I don’t deny that news. But, now all the issues have been solved. I will stay with the Congress and work for my community people.”
