Kerala cops gun down three maoists, kill another while inspecting encounter spot

The Kerala Thunderbolts, an elite command force of the Kerala Police, gunned down a maoist on Tuesday while they had gone to inspect the site of an encounter in which three maoists were killed.

According to the Kerala police, maoists fired at the Thunderbolt patrolling team inside the forest areas of Attapadi Hills of Palakkad early Monday morning. In retaliation, the Thunderbolt forces fired back, killing three maoists, including a woman.

The police had launched an operation to look for the missing fourth maoist but had to abandon it due to rain and darkness, a senior commando police officer told India Today TV.

On Tuesday morning, when the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) and local administration reached the encounter spot to identify the bodies, they were attacked again. The team had to teak defensive positions and retaliate, killing one more maoist.

Two out of the four slain Maoists have been identified by the police. One was Karthick from Tamil Nadu and the woman member was Jyoti from Karnataka. Identities of the other two deceased are yet to be ascertained.

Police sources said the maoists belonged to the Kabani Dal.

The Thunderbolt team has recovered arms and ammunitions, including AK-47 rifles and communication devices from the camp site deep inside the forest.
