A day after Rahul Gandhi took out a mega roadshow in Amethi, Union Minister Smriti Irani also put BJP’s growing strength on display in the Congress bastion by gathering an impressive crowd during her nomination which was also attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Smriti Irani began her day by performing hawan with her husband Zubin at the party office where hundreds of workers gathered with placards and were seen wearing t-shirts with her picture to show their solidarity.
The road show began from the BJP office in Sultanpur road. Irani, along with her husband, Yogi Adityanath and other party leaders constantly greeted the crowd as the truck made its way to the Guariganj intersection.
During the road show, which extended 3 kms long, people were seen showering petals on Yogi and Smriti at multiple places and the party workers were dancing and waiving the BJP flag to celebrate her nomination.
Speaking to India Today, Smriti said, “People’s support in the road show makes it clear that the Lotus will bloom not only in Amethi but across the country. Rahul Gandhi has kept Amethi deprived of development in the last 15 years. Since BJP has come to power, poor people have got homes, roads, toilets and electricity connection in the rural areas. The Congress chief is completely silent on the income tax raids that are being carried out in Madhya Pradesh exposing his leaders’ corrupt agenda.”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “Despite facing defeat in the 2014 polls, Smriti has always treated people of Amethi has her own family. She has been sending proposals to me for the development here but the Congress chief never took out time to think about his constituency. His decision of contesting from Wayanad makes it clearly that he has decided to run away from here fearing defeat.”
However Yogi didn’t attend Smriti’s nomination at the collectorate and left for his rally in Aligarh after the road show ended.
Yogi also left without holding a joint rally with Smriti Irani at Jamo road due to time constraints.
Interestingly, Smriti Irani took the same route and covered almost equal distance as the Congress chief did while filing his nomination in Amethi on Wednesday.
Rahul Gandhi, who has been representing Amethi in Parliament for the last three terms, won by a margin of more than 3 lakh votes in the 2004 and 2009 general elections.
However his victory margin reduced to 1.07 lakh votes in the last general elections after Smriti Irani was pitted against him.
In the 2017 state elections, the Congress faced embarrassment in Amethi by drawing a blank. Out of the five assembly seats , BJP won four and Samajwadi Party managed to get 1 seat.
Responding to Smriti’s nomination, UP Congress spokesperson Zeeshan Haider said, “On the directives of both Yogi and Irani, many development projects initiated by the Congress have been stalled. They have deliberately ignored Amethi and the people are going to teach them a lesson by helping Rahul Gandhi register his biggest election victory in the upcoming polls. The UP CM is doing polarisation politics by making statements like Bajrang Bali vs Ali. This shows that BJP’s claim of development for all is just a sham.”
