Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday said that Ramnath Kovind was made the President because of his caste ahead of the Gujarat Elections, to appease the Dalit community.
His comment can be seen as a move to woo Dalit voters away from the BJP.
In 2014, the BJP emerged as a major recipient of Dalit votes, whereas the Congress’ vote share in the community declined by 8 per cent.
Ashok Gehlot also pointed out how senior leader LK Advani was sidelined ahead of the elections.
Both Murli Manohar Joshi and LK Advani were denied tickets to fight the Lok Sabha 2019 polls.
While LK Advani has not said anything about being dropped from the party’s list of Lok Sabha candidates, he wrote a blog asserting his party never regarded those who disagreed with it politically as “anti-national”.
LK Advani and MM Joshi were sidelined in the party after 2014 general elections, in which the BJP got clear majority under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
