Odisha: Youth thrashed, made to touch feet of doctor he assaulted

A youth was thrashed on Monday for allegedly assaulting a doctor in government-run VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla, Sambalpur in Odisha.

A viral video shows the youth in torn clothes apologising and touching feet of the doctor he allegedly assaulted.

In the purported video, the man, surrounded by police and other doctors, is seen doing sit-ups and confessing to his mistake.

The incident happened on Sunday when some medical students from Veer Surendra Sai Institute Of Medical Science And Research (VIMSAR) caught hold of two youths who were trying to flee after allegedly assaulting Professor Suryakant Patjoshi of the neurology department.

The two accused had resorted to violence after the doctor reportedly refused to accompany them to a private nursing home.

Odisha Medical Services Association (OMSA) General Secretary Punyashloka Das said that a fact-finding team will be sent to the hospital to investigate the incident.

Kanwar Vishal Singh, Superintendent of Police, Sambalpur, said, “Two FIRs have been registered by both parties– one by the doctor and the other by the father of one of two youths, Sundar Beheraat– with the Burla police station.”

“On the basis of the complaint, police have registered a case under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC,” the SP said.
