From the vice-president of India to the chief minister of Delhi, all were present within a few yards of each other at various Ram Leela Pandals near Red Fort for Vijayadashmi celebrations.
Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was the first to mark his presence at Shri Dharmik Ramleela committee followed by Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu. Both the heavyweight politicians jointly inaugurated the Vijayadashmi celebrations by shooting a ceremonious arrow to burn Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnada’s effigies. The effigies were burnt without using any firecracker, instead, a big LCD screen was placed to create effects of crackers.
“I congratulate all on the occasion of Vijayadashmi. Lord Ram shows us the right path,” Venkaiah Naidu said while addressing a huge gathering.
At the adjacent Nav Dharmik Ramleela Committee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi attended the effigy burning ceremony. Manmohan Singh joined her later. Here, Manmohan Singh shot the ceremonial arrow for the burning of the three effigies. Both did not go for any speech.
At the adjacent Luv Kush Ramleela Committee, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal attended the ceremony with Deputy CM Manish Sisodia.
“This festival marks the victory of good over evil. We must follow the same path,” Kejriwal said.
In a statement released to the media, Kejriwal said, “We have defeated the Ravana of dengue and now it’s time to defeat the Ravana of pollution.”
