Congress rebel MLA from Raebareli Sadar Aditi Singh, who has been issued a show-cause notice for attending a special session of the Uttar Pradesh assembly and defying party’s orders, is among the party’s 40 star campaigners for the Assembly bypolls due later this month.
Aditi Singh had not only attended the special Assembly session, but also spoke in the House against her party’s decision to boycott it. The Raebareli MLA has been made it to the list of the party’s star campaigners slated for October 21, party sources said.
Senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik had released a list of 40 star campaigners which also included Aditi’s name. The list was released on September 28.
A party insider, on the condition of anonymity, said, “The list of star campaigners was issued in September and Aditi Singh defied party’s line on October 2 by boycotting Priyanka Gandhi’s padyatra and attending the special session of the state assembly.”
“A show-cause notice was issued to her on last Friday. She was given two-day time to reply but there has been no communication from her,” the party insider said.
“During elections, all the lawmakers of the party are told to campaign. However, Aditi Singh will not be allowed to participate in any party’s event till she submits her reply and the top leadership decide a future course of action,” a state Congress leader said.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has not given any official statement on its decision to include Aditi’s name in the star campaigner list.
After supporting the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 in Kashmir, Aditi Singh had brought a fresh embarrassment for her party by attending the 36-hour long special session of the state assembly called to discuss sustainable development goals on October 2.
Deviating from her party’s line, Aditi Singh had also called the abrogation of Article 370 provisions a positive step in national interest.
There are also speculations that Aditi Singh may soon join the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). Prominent state BJP leaders are reportedly in touch with her. She has also been provided ‘Y plus’ security by the Yogi Adityanath government.
When asked about deviating from the party line, Aditi Singh said, “”If you heard my speech, I only spoke about development and sustainable development goals. I practice politics the way my father used to do it — whatever I feel is correct, I do it.”
Aditi Singh said that she came to the house and participated in discussions as she felt that it was an appropriate thing to do.
